Unit 2: Matrices Portfolio with Critical Responses/Above and Beyond

Critical Response to Soda Warm Up: I thought that this warm up was very interesting because it showed that there are parts of math that can be used outside the classroom. I would have never thought to use matrices in the food business, but this activity showed me a way that you can. I also learned from this exercise that both advertising and food can relate to math. Now I can never look at a Coca-Cola ad the same way!

Critical Response to Harvesting Matrices Investigation Pt. 3: This was a new way of learning matrices than I have ever learned before. I didn't know that you could use matrices in modern day situations, such as farming and how to keep the population under control. With all of these different matrices, you can basically find a matrix that will fit your situation: For example, with sales you would use normal matrices, population; Leslie, and harvesting the harvesting model. I wouldn't have thought to use a matrix in these situations, but thanks to these units and these notes, I do now and will hopefully use this knowledge someday in the future.

Matrices Operations Quiz Pt. 1

Matrices Operations Quiz Pt.2

Critical Response to Matrices Operations Quiz:  I thought that this quiz was good because it once again showed how matrices can be used in modern day society. This quiz also showed that matrices don't limit themselves to animals; they can be used with people as well as inanimate objects. The part of the quiz that I found the most interesting were the matrices concerning nutritional information, I would have never thought to use matrices in that kind of situation.

Above and Beyond:  After doing some research, I found yet another situation you could use matrices with: viruses and bacteria. You could use both the Leslie and Harvesting matrix models to track a bacteria/viral disease to see how much it spreads given the specific birth and survival rates. Using these matrices, doctors could learn even more about the human body and how fast these dangerous viruses can grow, and develop antibiotics and other medicines to treat these issues.
